Requirements

  • Magecraft Source at Rank 3 or higher
  • Magecraft Skill at Rank 3 or higher
  • Rank 3 Only, 18 GXP

Effects

A mage with this benefit can use the Magecraft Skill to prepare Blank Spellpaper and create Spell Scrolls: consumable, single-use magic items that store a known spell for later activation.

Spellpaper and Inscription

When crafting a Spell Scroll, the mage must first prepare a piece (or several pieces) of “Spellpaper” - special paper, parchment, or slates imbued with magical energy - to contain the desired spell. Preparing Spellpaper involves the Inscription of complex arcane equations and runic symbols onto its surface with a Magecraft skill check. The number of successes achieved by this skill check (up to a maximum of 6) becomes the Inscription Rank of that piece of Spellpaper, which cannot be changed later. The Inscription process takes about 1 hour per Rank of the desired Inscription Rank, which must be determined before attempting the skill check. If the mage rolls 0 successes on her Magecraft roll to Inscribe a piece of Spellpaper, the Spellpaper is destroyed in the attempt.

Successfully Inscribing Spellpaper of a given Rank ten or more times may provide a +1 Proficiency bonus to the Magecraft Skill check or reduce the crafting time of future attempts at creating Spellpaper of that Inscription Rank by 30 minutes with Storyteller approval. The time required to Inscribe Spellpaper of any Rank may not be reduced below half of its original time.

Spell Scroll Creation

A spell may only be sealed in Spellpaper that was Inscribed with a number of successes (Inscription Rank) higher than or equal to the Rank of the desired spell; more powerful spells also require more Spellpaper to properly bind into a Spell Scroll.

Once the mage has enough Spellpaper of the appropriate Inscription Rank to accommodate her desired spell, she must locate a Nexus or Ley Line associated with the spell's magical Sphere, travelling there to complete a 1 minute ritual. Ley Lines or Nexuses containing Prime magic may be utilized to craft Spell Scrolls of any magical Sphere. During the ritual, the cost of casting the desired spell is paid and the individual pieces of Spellpaper merge together into a single Spell Scroll (or Spell Slate, dependent upon material type).

Generally, the mage activating a Spell Scroll controls how the spell is utilized at the moment that the spell is released. However, in the case of some spells such as healing spells, illusions, and other utility spells, the creator may (with Storyteller approval) spend 1 extra Mana during the ritual to pre-establish some effects of the crafted Spell Scroll. This may be useful in situations where the creator wishes to have some control over the output of a spell scroll that will be utilized later by themselves or another mage.

Purchasing Spellpaper

Spellpaper is a component used in the crafting of spell scrolls. Inscribed Spellpaper can be purchased directly at some mage consortiums, or a mage can purchase some Blank Spellpaper and attempt to Inscribe it herself for a reduced cost.

Example

Caladhiel is a Rank 5 Mind Mage who has stumbled on a cache of Blank Spellpaper. She wants to use some of it to craft a Spell Scroll of Glamour, a Rank 2 Mind Sphere spell, for a friend to use on an upcoming assignment with her Adventurers’ Guild. In preparation, she spends 2 hours preparing a single piece of Rank 2 Inscribed Spellpaper. When initiating the ritual that will complete the Spell Scroll, she considers the spell itself: Glamour is a spell which has effects which grow with the ability of the caster. Calla (with Storyteller approval) decides to spend 1 additional Mana to specifically limit the scroll’s output to provide only a Personal Glamour, which is less easily detectable than the more powerful and dangerous Enervating Glamour, and likely a safer option for her friend who is unfamiliar with advanced Mind Magic to utilize.

Spell Scroll Activation

Only those with access to the Magecraft Source may activate Spell Scrolls. Doing so in order to release the contained spell requires a Standard Action, wherein the scroll is unfurled in at least one hand and an activation word or phrase is read aloud (Verbal, Somatic, and Material components). Spell Scrolls that require a Casting Roll to function utilize the Casting Roll of their creator, which may be different than that of the person who activates the scroll. The effects of Spell Scrolls cannot benefit from a Focus bonus during crafting or upon activation.
