Mana is only spent and Backlash applied when the spell is initially cast, however the beam continues dealing damage according to the initial cast.  A target moving through a square with the beam may evade the beam by spending double movement to duck or jump over it. On subsequent turns, the caster may move the beam in one direction to a maximum of 180 degrees once per round without breaking concentration, dealing damage to all targets struck by the sweeping beam. If a target is slain by the beam, the next target in the path of the beam takes damage immediately.
